The BBC is reporting that public sector union Unison is set to fight any compulsory redundancies at hospitals in Devon and Cornwall.
Unison described the 200 proposed job cuts at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth and 300 at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro as "ridiculous". However both hospitals said the proposed cuts were financially necessary.
In a statement, the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust, said: "We recognise and respect the position that Unison have taken and it has always been, and continues to be, our intention to keep any compulsory redundancies to an absolute minimum.
"We are working in partnership with our trades unions to fully exploit all options, including redeployments and secondments, before any redundancies are considered."

It is absolutely immoral that MPs should consider giving away another 7 billion to the EU which has lost so much money in fraud and poor accounting when our hospitals are crying out for more funds and having to lay off staff. Cornwall has probably a larger proportion of retired people than many other counties and these people may have a greater reliance on the NHS. Money sent to the EU is money wasted on a project which has done nothing but harm to our country. If MPs ratify the re-named constitution it will be the end of democracy and the loss of our hard won freedoms. Any MP voting for this treaty can only be described as TRAITOR.
What on earth as gone wrong with this country, since so called New Labour came to power. They appear to want to destroy every good thing that former generation of UK citzens have fought and died for.
How can politicians so willingly donate another 7 billion of tax payers money to this Black Hole of incompetence and Deceit.
How many times have politicians of all parties promised us that OUR Borders would be secure and under the control of the UK government, that OUR jobs would be secure and many many other lies they have fostered onto us. We were promised a Referendum on the EU Constitution, so by calling it a different name they say we cant have one. We are now so close to a Dictatorship that it as become frightening.
The people of this Great United Kingdom of ours must wake up WE are being led by the nose by people who in another time would be arrested for treason and even today should be. Where are those people who consider themselves leaders hiding WE NEED YOU NOW.
